UKIEG Conference & AGM

We are delighted to invite you to the UKIEG Annual Conference & AGM 2026 on the 25th of June 2026, hosted by the Department of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, and supported by the University of Edinburgh.
This year’s conference, “Retrofitting for Health: Advancing Indoor Environmental Quality in the UK Building Stock,” will examine one of the most pressing challenges facing the built environment today: how to upgrade existing buildings while ensuring healthier indoor conditions for occupants.
Registration is now open. Participants can secure their place through the University of Strathclyde conference portal:
https://onlineshop.strath.ac.uk/conferences-and-events/engineering-faculty/architecture/ukieg-conference-agm-2026.
Early registration is encouraged as places are limited. The conference will bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, housing providers, and industry professionals to discuss the critical role of retrofit in improving indoor environmental quality, health, and wellbeing across the UK’s building stock.
As the UK accelerates efforts to decarbonise its ageing building stock, retrofit is increasingly recognised not only as an energy and carbon imperative but also as a critical public health opportunity. Poor indoor environmental quality—including inadequate ventilation, damp and mould, overheating, acoustic discomfort, and insufficient daylight—continues to affect millions of homes and workplaces. Without careful design, implementation, and evaluation, retrofit interventions risk perpetuating or even exacerbating these issues.
We invite submissions for oral and poster presentations addressing the conference pillars:

  1. Retrofit as a Public Health Intervention: Exploring the relationship between retrofit strategies, indoor environmental quality, and occupant health, including issues such as damp and mould, ventilation, overheating, and health inequalities.
  2. Performance Evidence and Lessons from Practice: Showcasing case studies and empirical research that provide pre- and post-retrofit insights, highlight measurable outcomes, and bridge the gap between design intent and operational performance.
  3. Policy, Regulation, and National Programmes: Examining the role of regulatory frameworks, technical standards, and major initiatives in shaping healthier indoor environments.
  4. Residents, Behaviour, and Social Value: Understanding how resident engagement, behavioural factors, and lived experience influence retrofit success and long-term building performance.
  5. Data, Monitoring, and Building Intelligence: Leveraging advances in monitoring technologies, building performance evaluation, and data analytics to inform decision-making and support continuous improvement.
  6. Designing the Next Generation of Healthy Buildings: Translating lessons from retrofit into future design approaches, helping to ensure that new buildings avoid repeating the challenges of the existing stock.

The submission deadline is on the 10th of April 2026.

Please email your abstract (300 words) using this template to alejandro.moreno-rangel@strath.ac.uk with the subject title ‘UKIEG 2026’. In your email, include your abstract using this template and specify if you are applying for an oral or poster slot. The call for abstracts will remain open until 10th of April 2026.

We welcome abstracts that align with these pillars and advance knowledge and practice at the intersection of indoor environmental quality, health, and retrofit. Submissions are encouraged from researchers at all career stages, as well as from professionals from industry, government, housing, and the third sector.

UKIEG, the University of Strathclyde and the University of Edinburgh particularly encourage participation from early-career researchers and emerging practitioners, recognising the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping the future of healthy buildings.

Join us in Glasgow for an important national conversation on how retrofit can support not only a low-carbon future, but a healthier one.
